How to Check Whether Your Pool Water Is Balanced

The Langelier Saturation Index shows whether pool water tends to be corrosive, balanced, or scale-forming.

When our pool was installed, pool school covered the equipment, valves, and basic operation. Water chemistry received much less attention. For the first couple of years, I mostly followed the simple advice I had been given: shock the pool once a week and adjust individual readings when they looked off.

Then I noticed etching in the plaster. That told me something was
wrong, even though I had been checking chlorine and making routine adjustments.
What I did not know was whether the water as a whole was actually balanced.

What LSI Tells You

That search led me to the Langelier Saturation Index, usually
called LSI. It combines several water conditions—including pH, temperature,
total alkalinity, calcium hardness, total dissolved solids, and the effect of
stabilizer—to estimate how the water may affect plaster and equipment.

The result is one easy-to-read number. A commonly used balanced
range is -0.30 to +0.30. A reading below -0.30 indicates water that may be
corrosive. A reading above +0.30 indicates water that may form calcium scale.
Values within the range indicate balanced calcium-carbonate saturation.

LSI does not replace routine sanitizer testing or good pool
maintenance. It adds the missing big-picture view by showing how the readings
work together. That was the information I had been looking for.
